About CLIC Sargent

Every day 10 children and young people are told that they have cancer. CLIC Sargent is the UK's leading cancer charity for children and young people, and their families. We provide clinical, practical and emotional support to help them cope with cancer and get the most out of life. We rely on the support of individuals and companies to continue to provide these essential services.

Doctors must improve communication with young cancer patients

CLIC Sargent was pleased to see that the National Cancer Patient Experience Survey released on 17 August showed that there has been a general perception of an improvement in services for cancer patients, and that young cancer patients aged 16 to 25 are more likely to be given information about financial help and benefits.

However, the charity is concerned that young cancer patients still feel they are not being given information about their condition in a way that they can understand. This has also been picked up in two previous national cancer surveys and data from the Care Quality Commission.

“It is crucial that young people understand the medical information they are given, so that they can make informed decisions whenever possible,” said Lorraine Clifton, Chief Executive of CLIC Sargent.

“Health professionals need to address this by looking at how they communicate, and consulting with young people so that clear, concise and accurate information without jargon or unnecessary medical terminology becomes standard.”
